Tense moments in an east Bakersfield neighborhood, after deputies say a man tried to commit suicide by setting his house on fire.
Firefighters say 36-year-old Adam Arteaga turned on the gas and set fire to the home in the 1800 block of California Avenue last night. Heavy smoke forced him out and he was pulled off the front porch.
Sheriff's deputies went door to door and evacuated nearby homes. Arteaga was arrested and has been booked in jail on charges of arson. Damage to the house is estimated at 50 thousand dollars. No other homes were damaged.
