The man accused of killing an elderly woman in Old Town Kern says he didn't do it. 31-year-old David Webster spoke to 17 News Tuesday in a jail house interview. Webster was high on methamphetamine and in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Webster is facing murder, burglary and gang charges. Police believe Webster killed 84-year-old Margy Licastro at her home in the 1900 block of Baker Street.
"I may have done certain things in my life but I've never physically hurt anyone bad," said Webster.
Police arrested Webster Tuesday morning, at a home less than a block from Joseph and Margy Licastro's home on Baker Street. "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time or something," continued Webster.
Webster says the Huerta family hired him and a friend to clean out the apartment behind their home. "We were high, not sleeping, what else are we going to be doing?" said Webster.
"For him to say he knew me was surprising because I didn't know who he was," noted Huerta.
Huerta said he was peeking through the curtains of the apartment behind his home, when he saw Webster going through his mother in law's things. Knowing his mother in law wasn't home, Huerta told his wife to call police.
"I was just keeping an eye on him so he wouldn't take off," continued Huerta.
Police say earlier that morning, they received a call from the murder victim's husband, 91-year-old Joseph Licastro who said his home had been burglarized.
"They asked where Mrs. Licastro was. He thought she was sleeping and when they went into check they found she had been murdered," said Sgt. Mary DeGeare, Bakersfield Police Department.
Police believe Webster is responsible for both burglaries and Margy Licastro's death. "They discovered that he had evidence belonging to the Licastro family, and then there was evidence at the Licastro home that linked him to the crime," continued Sgt. DeGeare.
Joseph Licastro is one of two known Pearl Harbor survivors in Kern County. 17 news interviews him every year on the anniversary of the attack. Neighbors say him and his wife were a wonderful couple, who had called Baker Street home for 40 years.
Webster is being held without bail. He is scheduled to be in court Wednesday afternoon.
