The family of Jonathan Lopez said detectives told them Thursday their son was shot six times in the back because the officer thought he was going to run. Police would neither confirm nor deny this to 17 News.

Detectives visited the Lopez family at their home Thursday morning. The family said what they heard was worse than they expected.

"The detective straight told me that the officer fired six rounds into my son's back when he was getting up from the floor because he thought he was going to run," said Bernie Lopez, Jonathan Lopez's father. Lopez said that was the news detectives gave him and his wife.

Bakersfield police said Officer Keith Cason thought Lopez was armed when he shot him, but realized when he arrested Lopez that he was not.

"My son is wounded bad. He can't run no more and yet he fired six rounds to his back. He did it because he wanted to kill him," said Lopez.

Police did not grant an on-camera interview Thursday and would not discuss the family's claim, saying it's too early in the investigation. The family is furious.

"He committed a murder. I know he took an oath of the law. He broke that law. He murdered my son," said Lopez. "He shot him six times on the back. To me, that's cold-blooded murder."

According to police, Lopez fired a round at Officer Cason before Lopez ditched his gun. Police said they later found the gun with witness help. 17 News spoke to a man who said the gun was found under his oven.

"They told me they found it under my stove. I told them I cooked dinner on that damn thing tonight. That's not cool," said the man.

Police said Edna Diaz hid Lopez's gun under the stove. Fearing for his family's and his own safety he does not want to be named but here's what he told us.

"Edna said 'Hey, can I come over here?' I'm like sure because she was a nice lady so she came in the house. She didn't have no purse. She had her cigarettes and her phone all wrapped in a towel, and I am like, 'Edna have a seat,'" said the man.

The man said that's when he suspects Diaz hid the gun.

The man says police told him the revolver was loaded and that Lopez threw the gun over a green fence before Diaz picked it up. Police said witnesses led them to the man's apartment.

"Apparently somebody seen her grab, pick it up and bring it into my house," said the man.

Thank-you Jesus that the police officer was not harmed by the criminal with a gun. He was doing something wrong by holding a gun.

some people keep referring to lopez as a "human being"-- i think he was much closer to a rabid animal- a career criminal, that was armed and shot at a police officer, luckily the officer was not hurt and the animal was put down. due to jerry browns prison re-alignment, and our fine federal judges, this cockroach was released into society to commit more crimes.

Got news for you Drako the people of Bakersfield see it like this. The felons that get early release and decide to go out and shoot at the police need to be shot dead before they kill one of us, so in these cases we support the police. Or an felon that attacks the police with an beer same thing! Now the police driving at an high rate of speed with no lights or sirens killing people crossing the street most of us do not support the cop on this one! Now if you have more respect for the felons then you must be one or have family members that are!

It's not about Lopez or the cop. What it is about is he people of Bakersfield being so cold. Automatically thinking a cop is in the right. Just like with David Turner at the Fastrip or Deputy Swearinigin killing two people with his cruiser. The people of Bakersfield always back cops, even those that commit criminal actions. How is it not obvious to all that a man walking home with his son, who was proven to have NOTHING illegal on him, and was attacked by the cops FIRST by their own admission and then shot dead, that something is wrong? These kind of events will continue until the people decide to open their eyes. Closed minded idiots posting hateful comments on this site about a DEAD man are a disgrace to society. I give more respect to a felon who shoots at a cop than an idiot hiding behind his comp at home like a kid talking about a DEAD man. WORSE THAN SCUM!

queen, who are you to tell anyone they can't comment here? Lopez was a career criminal, plain and simple. He did nothing but prey on society. When he chose to try and kill a police officer, he suffered the consequences. I'm just glad the officer wasn't shot, and the felon was. However I do agree with you on one thing, Lopez was a human being. But I would add a worthless human being. And FYI, this involves all law abiding citizens. So go pee up a rope, along with your silly, mistake filled comment.

Really?! You are all writing on here putting negative comments on a human being?1 we are all human and we all make mistakes and if he was ever in jail that doesnt give you a right to start making rude comments based on something you THINK you know! How bout you go else where with you non-sense and go fine something else to critize! your no where near perfect so keep your opinions to your self! if you dont like him or his lifestyle dont waste your time on commenting on something that doesnt concern you!!

Fgama, please tell me ONE positive thing Lopez did as an adult to contribute to society. And you can't use keeping D.A.'s, judges, law enforcement officers, prison guards, and parole agents gainfully employed as one of them.
