Over the weekend, 24-year-old Lieutenant Samuel Van Kopp was taken out of a medically induced coma at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. and is in stable condition.
A family friend says he was taken off his ventilator and most of his medications. For the first time Sunday, Van Kopp spoke a few words to his family.
He was wounded in a suicide bomb attack last week. There's a piece of shrapnel lodged in his brain.
