It's a place for kids in Kern County to go after school to have fun and staying out of trouble. But after 85-years in Bakersfield, the YMCA may be forced to close its doors.

CEO Clete Harper tells us he inherited $100,000 of debt when he took over the local YMCA, a year ago.

Harper says if creditors don't get paid, the local YMCA will have to file for chapter seven bankruptcy June first.

"We need to raise $200,000. $100,000 of that will go to pay off old debt. The other $100,000 will give us working capital for another year, which gives us time to restructure our operation model and to expand the programs that are doing well for us and we're gonna have to get rid of the programs that aren't," said CEO Clete Harper.

Harper hopes the community will help save the YMCA.

Donations can be made by calling 837-9622 or visiting their website at www.ymcaofkern.net

KERN COUNTY please the only thing important is the 600 kids and families the YMCA leaving affects. That is why my company is stepping in and doing something to protect and secure the future of Kern Youth. As of June 4th SWOOSH SPORTS ACADEMY will be offering Summer Youth Sports and Summer Day Camp at the same affordable prices the Y offered to the community. We are hosting a Fundraiser and Sign up day this sat. at 5850 District Blvd.in the same complex as the YMCA. We are seeking volunteers and Community Support to make this transition seamless. Our event will include a Monopoly Tournament and Bounce House, FOOD,GAMES and prizes. Sign up info. and event info can be sent to coachcraigt@hotmail.com I BELIEVE IN KERN COUNTY AND ITS YOUTH. PLEASE be there this Sat. 8am to 3pm to show your support for the start up of a great community program.

If the local Y has been ran into the ground by incompetent management, poor financial decisions, etc why in the heck should we bail it out!! Sad, but the beauty of a free market. Crash and burn.......

I think the problems started under Bagala and his B of D at the time. You may remember that he refused to cooperate with the United Way and lost a $50,000 per year grant from them. Then he butted heads with the Panama School District which cost the YMCVA their inexpensive program distribution letter.

Blame the boys in the hood of who keeps ripping the place off and destroing the equipment! Blame the 80% in this state living off the free programs all their lives braking the bank! Blame our great government in this state and country for supporting all the deadbeats and every other country in the world and crapping on the working middle class in this country!
