BAKERSFIELD, CA - From cows and chickens to fruits and vegetables, some Kern County elementary students are taking part in an interactive learning experience at the 28th annual Farm Day in the City. About 3,000 students are heading to the Kern County Fairgrounds for a lesson in agriculture. Whether they like playing with animals, farming machinery or even cattle roping, it seems there is something for everyone.
Some 2nd through 4th grade students are getting hands on, up close, and having fun at Farm in the City Day.
Kern County Farm Bureau Executive Director Ben McFarland said, "I just want them to have a good time. I think that I want the kids to come here and understand that agriculture is a very important part of our community but it's also a fun part."
The Kern County Farm Bureau has been providing kids with the interactive learning experience for almost three decades.
McFarland said, "We live in the 3rd largest producing county in the United States for agriculture, so it's important that we show these kids the importance of agriculture as it relates to our economy and then also the community at large."
The students are taking it all in. With dozens of demonstrations, displays, and activities it's hard to pick a favorite.
"Caring about animals is going to be fun and you can care about your animals that you have at home," said student Amber Alvrez.
Farm Day in the City started Tuesday and will continue through Wednesday afternoon.
Organizers say it's the largest continuous ag-education program in the state, hosted by a county farm bureau.
