A man from Lake Isabella died after driving over the side of the Kern River Canyon early Tuesday.
The man, identified as Charles Scott Lovell, was driving east on the 178 near the Upper Richbar Campground when his white, 2002 Chevy Trailblazer careened down a steep dirt embankment. The crash occurred shortly after midnight.
Lovell, 41, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected, the CHP reported.
A witness told CHP officers the SUV was going about 90 miles per hour when he overturned. The CHP reported Lovell was traveling 40 to 50 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
No one else was in the SUV at the time.
The CHP has not determined if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
