The idea of immigration reform has a lot of people talking. Many say it's a step in the right direction.

A proposal like this could legalize thousands of illegal immigrants here in Kern County, but with tighter border security as part of the plan, it's a proposal many in Kern County said they can get behind.

"They're always in fear and they are very limited," said Johanne Martinez of Bakersfield.

We live among thousands of illegal immigrants here in Kern County.

"My parents came from Mexico and they struggled, but they did what they had to do to become citizens. But, it was very hard from them," said Martinez.

Now, there's a proposal to reform and tighten security on the border, but light a path to citizenship for the eleven million illegal immigrants already here.

"I have my papers already, but I am always in favor of the people don't have it yet," said Eduardo Garcia of Bakersfield.

"We do need it," said Judith Seeds Miller, Immigration Attorney. Miller works with illegal immigrants every day.

"We have a large number of people who are living here out of status or undocumented," said Miller.

She is very much in favor of the reform.

"I think we are finally going to be able to tap into a lot of talent that's here that we haven't been able to utilize, and I think bringing them up will bring all of us up," said Miller.

Some Kern County Republicans also support the issue.

"This proposal will allow people to come out of hiding and work towards becoming citizens," said Nayely Sanchez, a Kern County Young Republican.

Sanchez said as long as this plan ensures better security on the border she supports the measure.

"Hopefully, with this it will be something that's moving towards the right direction, creating change, addressing illegal immigrants, but at the same time respecting individuals who have been waiting a long time to come here legally," said Sanchez.

But, there are still opponents of the reform.

"I think everybody here should be legal," said Dick Jennings of Bakersfield. "If people are here and they are not here legally they shouldn't be here."

But, on this bi-partisan bill many said this is a step in right direction.

"I think it is a win-win," said Miller.

I agree RVLADY they do come here the welfare, which they refer to as "opportunities". They commit crimes, have more kids than they can afford and than rely on our government to feed, clothe, and educate their children. And when their kids get knocked up at 14 or 15 years old, the cycle starts all over again. What did people do before these government programs to take care of their families? They went out and worked harder to make ends meet. Government programs make people lazy, because they know at the end of the day they have a handout that will take care of them.

What part of the word Illegal do people not comprehend? One does not give an unruly child a treat for being unruly. Citizenship is earned and as far as I can tell when one gives a criminal something good, it encourages more criminals to do the exact thing the other did. How can we raise our children and grandchildren to respect the laws when they see criminals being rewarded for breaking the law?

This is just like a trash can, when it gets full of trash you just empty it and start over, yes this has all been done before and laws have been put into place to stop it from happening, just none of the laws are ever enforced and they will not get enforced this time!Out of the millions giving amnesty last time most of them and their families are now living off the free system, this just give another 20 million the path to the free system in 5 years!

Sure make all the illegals legal residents and secure the borders. Didn't Reagan promise tighter border security when he gave amnesty to the illegals opening the pathway for them to become citizens? Fines against those that hired illegals? and now the politicians are doing the same thing again. And in twenty years, if we still have a country, the politicians will be giving amnesty to the next 20 million illegals in the country because the border still won't be tightened.

Now the illegals can come out of hiding? There's articles all the time where an illegal proudly proclains he or she is an illegal and nothing is done, it's as if they are hero's.
