Kern County Fair death in 1967 sparked state ride inspection law

A ride at the Kern County Fair is still shut down after it partially collapsed and left riders upside-down in mid-air Saturday. Cal-OSHA is investigating the accident. A state law that requires annual inspections of fair rides was written after a teenager was killed on a ride at the Kern County Fair, 45 years ago.

I was there that night the girl as killed, and if the stories circulating around the ride were correct, it was on the Scrambler. The girl stood up and when the ride jerked backward, she fell out forward, then raised up her head and was hit before the operator could stop the ride. If that is truly what happened, sounds more like somebody not following the rules rather than an unsafe ride. In any event, it is sad when a young person is hurt or killed, regardless of the reason.
