BAKERSFIELD, CA - Automated external defibrillators can save lives. For years, parents have been fighting to get AEDs on high school campuses. On Monday night, trustees with the Kern High School District voted unanimously to put them on every campus.
In November, Centennial High School sophomore Caleb Hannink died on campus from sudden cardiac arrest. Many believe if the school had an AED, Caleb might be alive today.
Last month, the district told 17 News, to make AEDs accessible within four minutes to every student, it would have to purchase 135 to 175 AEDs. It would cost up to $367,000 initially and up to $90,000 every year after.
Trustee Chad Vegas says there's no clear timetable yet, since each campus will have to be individually assessed.
