PHOENIX (AP) - A judge has blocked the most controversial sections of Arizona's new immigration law from taking effect Thursday, handing a major legal victory to opponents of the crackdown.

The law will still take effect Thursday, but without many of the provisions that angered opponents - including sections that required officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws. The judge also put on hold a part of the law that required immigrants to carry their papers at all times, and made it illegal for undocumented workers to solicit employment in public places.

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton put those controversial sections on hold until the courts resolve the issues. Opponents say the law will lead to racial profiling and is trumped by federal immigration law.

The problem stems from these "federal judges" that have way too much authority, or they believe they do. One judge can trump the collective will of the people, the governor, the attorney general, the legislative body. Is something wrong with this picture, you better believe it! We should take extreme care of watching who gets to sit on these judical benches. There is a process of impeachment to get rid of rogue judges.

Sorry, I'm conservative, detest organized religion and have american indian and spanish ancestry. It isn't racism, it is a problem our government swept under the rug so long it is now out of control. It isn't racism, it is simply people breaking the law.

BigMattCA1 - 7/29/2010 8:27 PM
if that part of the law would have passed, would it still be considered racist if a mexican cop was enforcing it, or is it only the white boy cop who's considered racist.

How is only being able to speak french, russian, spanish, tagalo, etc being racist? Especially since russion, french, spanish, etc is not a race but a nationality. I know people that can speak different languages that are white, pacific islander, asian, black etc. Also if states cannot trump federal law how come Ca & Ma for instance can trump federal gun laws? BTW, last I heard Az did not reserve the right to secede like Tx did.

Maybe Arizona should join Texas in its efforts to succeed from the Union!

Ima-if he detains the guy for just speaking french or russian, yeah that's racism. Face it, the racial profiling component of Arizona's immigration law will not stand up if it gets to the US Supreme Court. And it's not just due to civil rights being violated, but because of past court decisions regarding the Supremecy Clause. Arizona cannot, on their own, decide to trump federal jurisdiction (immigration enforcement falls under federal jurisdiction). BAsed on that fact and that factor alone, the Federal Government has a water tight case against the State of Arizona and Governor Brewer. Try taking a Government 101 course.

so if the person being pulled over for breaking the law is mexican, which btw isn't a race it's a nationality, it's racist but if the cops pull over a white guy here illegally from say europe or Canada it's not racist? I don't see the problem with being asked for a drivers licence & running it, after all that is what police do when they stop anyone for breaking the law. To get a licence you have to show proof of residency, at least whites do, is it different for others?

Mark-that's because statistically, they usually are. Those damn ignorant statistics! The problem with the law is that it establishes race as probable cause to detain and question. That IS RACISM by definition.

Typical. Anyone who supports immigration reform is instantly thought of as a white, well off, right wing, bible thumping racist. Amazing the conclusions ignorant people can come to when forced to think.
