"So what we get drunk. So what we smoke weed," Wiz Khalifa and rapper Snoop Dogg sing in their latest hit "Young, Wild & Free." It's a song about high schoolers getting high, drunk and partying. But not every student can relate.
"So what we get math. So what we like to read. We're just doing work. Hope the colleges see!" No, it's not a Snoop Dogg music video. It's an English class interpretation of what's cool.
"Hearing these lyrics about getting high and getting drunk when for us at least, we took it as an idea and reason to kind of make fun of ourselves," student Kaelyn De Leon said.
For these students at Independent High School, nerdy is the new cool. To promote learning, Ms. Glazer gave her advanced placement English class an assignment where their challenge was to re-write the lyrics to two popular songs.
"All the lyrics we did were based off things that are associated with nerds," student Ethan Cantrell said. "We talked a lot about equations or made references to novels."
Snoop Dogg's "Young, Wild & Free" became "Young, Wild & Geeky."
"So what we're in class that's how it's supposed to be we're just living like a geek," the students sang.
LMFAO's "I'm sexy and I know it" became "I'm nerdy and I know it."
The students posted their videos on YouTube to get their message out.
"Among our campus we started walking to class and people were like, we've seen your video!" De Leon said.
The students are in a competition to see which video gets the most hits on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbITQAGfOl4&feature=player_detailpagehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGjGG4h1gnI
