Homer Joy, the man who wrote about the streets of Bakersfield, has died.
Joy wrote the song, "The Streets of Bakersfield," made famous by Buck Owens and Dwight Yoakam, long before he actually lived here.
In 2006, Joy had a heart transplant and when that heart began to fail he moved to Bakersfield in 2010.
His good friend, Thomas Rockwell, owner of Trout's Nightclub in Bakersfield, says Joy was taken on and off the transplant list at UCLA Medical Center over the years because of his poor health.
Doctors told Homer Joy he needed to escape the Valley's bad air, so he and his wife moved to Las Vegas earlier this year.
Rockwell says Joy was hospitalized about a week and a half ago and Tuesday evening around 5 p.m., his heart gave out.
