Homeless Center residents fret over GET bus changes

Some homeless women and children are worried about more than where they are going to sleep. They're concerned about how they are going to get around because, come Sunday, GET buses will not stop in front of their shelter.

It's part of a two-year study to make GET bus routes faster and cheaper. But, homeless shelter residents say the new stop is too far away and they feel like they are being thrown under the bus.

"Without any reliable transportation close by or in a convenient location, it makes it really hard on us," said Shantee Jimenez.

Shantee Jimenez is a single mother of four and uses this bus stop every day. But, come Sunday, she and her kids will have to use another stop that's four blocks away.

"It's a huge issue. We actually did that walk the other day, and it was awful," said Jimenez.

The stop is at California Ave. and Washington St. and it forces them to walk a half mile across East Truxtun Ave., a very busy street that's been the location of two pedestrian fatalities in the last decade.

"It's dangerous. Is it going to take a small child being killed or hurt for us to wake up and say this is a bad idea because it's a horrible idea?", said Louis Gill, CEO of Bakersfield Homeless Center.

"I could do it, but a lot of the people that are handicapped or have children can't do that," said Tammy Willhite, a Bakersfield Homeless Center resident.

"I had a knee replacement surgery and I cannot make the walk. I tried it and I got halfway, and I just can't make the walk," said resident Brenda Walters.

GET bus officials say they eliminated the stop to decrease the cost and speed up the route.

"In order to serve the homeless shelter we have to move off of California Avenue. We have to go into a residential street and come back out. That slows the bus down," said Gina Hayden, Spokesperson for the Golden Empire Transit.

She cited that the majority of people they surveyed don't mind the new routes.

"70 percent of the people say this is a better service for them or it doesn't change anything for them," said Hayden.

The Homeless Center doesn't accept their reasoning.

"I understand and that there are cost savings. What's a kid worth?," said Gill.

For Jimenez, it's just another thing she has to worry about. "It's very convenient where it's at, and for them to take it, it just makes it that much harder. As if we weren't going through enough, we have to worry about this."

There is a service called GET-a-Lift for disabled riders to get curb to curb service if they can't walk to the bus stop. But, you have to apply and qualify.

The Get Bus sucks period! All the crazy people, stinky bums and some sorry drivers to. Hell fomm the time I leave my door to walk to a stop and wait for the bus I can walk in the same time to my destination especially when it's more than one bus you need!

If Ms Tammy Willhite and ilk can prove that there are “a lot of the people that are handicapped or have children” that can't walk that alleged “half mile”, then, I’m all for bus service there. The bus service would not have been eliminated if there were sufficient number of ridership. Also, there are mini-buses that serve the handicap with legitimate reason. Better yet, don’t worry about “other people”. Let the pundits handle that. Focus more on getting out of your permanent residency at the Homeless Center. It is supposed to be a "temporary shelter" NOT "Home Sweet Home"!!!!!!

The woman on the news is seriously overweight, has 4 kids with one being a newborn. If she wanted to do the right thing she would be eating right, feeding her kids right, and would stop getting knocked up with kids she obviously can't afford. If she doesn't like the terms of the handouts do what the rest of us do. Take care of yourself and the ones (count them, 4) you took the responsibility of bringing into this world herself. It's an old saying but it sticks around because it always rings true, "beggars can't be choosers".

One thing I had to learn was that the sun did not rise and set on my ass! Life does not always go my way! I don't always get what I want or what is convenient for me! Life can be tough! Even though I don't have everything I want I do have what I need and am grateful for it and for the job I have to pay for it. People seem to think that life is just going to hand them everything - well, it's not. For years when I was younger I did not have a car and I had to walk everywhere or take the bus. Sometimes the bus schedule was not convenient but I didn't whine about it - I figured out what I had to do to get where I needed to go. I'm with Ginny. I am running out of compassion for the people who are offered a hand up and instead want a hand out. I can't speak for anyone else, but I have had bad things happen in my life (both beyond my control and as a result of my own actions) and I had to take responsibility, do what needed to be done, and work hard to get back on track. Again, Ginny had it right, put your big girl panties on and deal with life on life's terms. We just don't get everything we want all wrapped up in a convenient package.

To all the rude comments to the GET story and the shelter....walk a mile in one of the residents shoes people!!! I was forced into staying at the shelter for 5 months due to circumstances beyond my control. Being disabled, it's hard to find a place to accomodate my needs quickly. It wasn't ideal, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Some of these people have no income whatsoever or their income doesn't rise to the level of being able to sustain a life (ie rent, utilities, food..BASIC needs). I know personally of several women who were out daily looking for employment. Most employers don't want to hire someone at a homeless shelter because they perceive them to be unreliable. Which is bull. If anything, they would be even more reliable to avoid returning to the shelter. Yes, there were several people there that seemed to enjoy living there. Which, in my opinion, shouldn't be allowed. Some had been there years. The bus being right out front of the shelter was very convenient. But to take it to where they did, is dangerous and rediculous. Some of the other changes in the routes are also rediculous. Seems they took from those that rely on the bus more than other areas that needed to be removed. As an almost daily rider on several of the routes, I can see the flaws. But just because you are a member of the "haves", do not put down those that are in the "have not" catagory. Like I said, walk a mile in their shoes (and situation) before you start judging. For those that believe....judge not, lest ye be judged!!!

They took out some school stops too. They say to decrease cost. Why do they increase there fare? Get bus not very reliable transportation. Not a very nice outfit either. From what i have seen in the last ten years you need to put out more buses and stops.

Where do I even start on this one. Let's start with the person who said they had a knee replacement. That type of surgery is to improve your ability to walk. For you to say you could only get halfway to the new bus stop (2 blocks) is not believeable, UNLESS after having your knee done you did not follow doctors orders and do the exercises, etc. that can be done without having to even go to therapy in most cases. My father had to have both of his knees done and he ended up being able to do anything he wanted. He went back to running and everything he used to do. As for the mother of 4, don't cry me a river...If I want to take the bus I have quite a walk (much further then 4 blocks. It seems to me she has become so entrenched in the entitlements she receives, that to now have to walk 4 blocks she can't imagine loosing her door to door service. Lady, put your big girl panties on and walk the 4 blocks. I do and always have felt great compassion for people, but I'm finding it harder and harder these days.
