An east Bakersfield landmark officially closed its doors Sunday.

Green Frog Market on Bernard Street and Alta Vista Drive, opened in 1934 and has been serving customers since.

The owner of Green Frog said the property changed owners, and the store's lease was up at the end of the month.

A Dollar General store will take its place.

Green Frog closed its Columbus Street location in November 2011.

Look at it this way, most people these days, will be buying their groceries at either the 99 cent stores and Walmart in Bakersfield.

The owners of Green Frog Market sold the property to Dollar General for $1.6 Million and were in a short term lease situation by their own choice. One would think that they would be motivated by the goodness in their hearts to do the right thing by paying the money owed employees who lost their jobs over a year ago. It is sad that Green Frog is closing. It is even sadder that the family that owns Green Frog cares more about their money than they do about the people who worked for their family business. Charlie Everett would have done the right thing.
