California Governor Jerry Brown signed a new state budget into law Wednesday but not before using his veto authority to trim millions from the spending plan.

Among those cuts were cuts to college financial aid and state child care programs.

Some say buying groceries at the store will be tougher for thousands of Californians who receive state assistance. The governor cut 54 million dollars in extra funding for Cal-Fresh, also known as the food stamp program.

The veto cuts will also mean 34 hundred fewer slots for child care statewide.

Overall, there are 195 million dollars less in the state budget because Brown wants a bigger reserve to cover emergencies.

"If we have a bad fire season, and we hope that we don't, if the cost of fighting those fires outstrips those 92 million dollars in the budget, we go to the reserve to cover the additional costs that are associated with that," said H.D. Palmer, spokesman for the California Department of Finance.

The budget cuts will help close the state's more than 15 billion dollar deficit.

If they want to save money on fires . Then they should ban any smoking and fireworks its not a nessecity to smoke. STAGE 3 funding is important for parent who need the extra help in order to work and not be on welfare to not be forced to collect unemployment. When our econmy took a hit last time and people were lost their houses. Restricting more from those that need help is not the way to go at all . am a single mother taking care of two boys I went to college to get my degree in the medical field im a medical assistant . We are told we need at least 2 years expierence in order to wrok its like a catch 22. I have worked at the same job for 2 years going on 3 to build up my expierence . With this new budget cut I will be forced to have to quit working. This cut is making the poor even worse do they not see what this is leading to the way everything is being ran ? People everywhere have been talking about during our lifetime there will be marshall law . Thats not something I care to see in my life. But, it sure makes you wonder if its true it will only be a matter of time I suppose.

Dannie73, if they did that what would the poor immigrants do? Starve? They NEED that money, and if they want to buy dope, well, it's theur money to spend as they see fit! Section 8 helps these unfortunates have a decent place to live, it's a good program for poor folks. Your elected officials in Sacramento deserve a high wage for all the hard work they do. It'd a tough job, and they need that early full-pay retirement benefit because of the stress they went through serving OUR needs. And if you don't recognize extreme sarcasm when you see it..sorry.

I know a fella that waits until 10pm the night before the "entitlements" are loaded on the debit card, That is when the money gets posted. He has a standing appointment with his connect at 10:30 to get his dope. He is my cousin and no, I don't associate with him much. He's on mental disability, perfectly able bodied but bi-polar. It's bullcrap (I got a red box when I wrote the obvious word. We are censored) and I am considering letting the cops in on it, the where and when, but conflicted about it. The cops are already on to the last day of the month and this sort of thing but I just can't bring myself to get him thrown in jail.

If you cut all benifits to all the illegals and start requiring random drug testing for anyone who receives any kind of aid from the stae be it Housing allowance(section 8),medi-cal, Foodstamps or Cash aid. The state will save money. Hell for most jobs you have to pass a drug screening to get hired and bosses can require random drug test. plus all the fat cats up in Sacramento need to take a pay cut and try to live on what the rest of us do.

I don't claim to be any sort of financial wizzard, but cut $195 million so there will be more money in reserve? How can there be any reserve at all when there's a $15 billion deficit?
