Governor Jerry Brown declared a special election Friday morning to fill the seat of former Shafter Senator Michael Rubio.

The election for the 16th Senate District is set for July 23rd with the primary to be held May 21st.

Rubio resigned two weeks ago, citing a need to spend more time with his family. He'll be taking a government relations position with Chevron in Sacramento.

Rubio's decision to leave the Senate eliminated, at least temporarily, the Democrats' supermajority status in both houses of the state legislature.

RVLADY, I sure hope he is paying this it! After all the money he got for his campaign, he at least owes the people who elected him that much. He abandoned his position when a better job offer came along, using his family as an excuse.
