BAKERSFIELD, CA - In a Contact 17 News investigation, Frank wants to know why the City of Bakersfield has allowed gophers to take over Yokuts Park.

We found that gophers aren't the only problem, squirrels are causing a ruckus as well.

When you are walking around Yokuts Park, it doesn't take long to notice all of the squirrels. They can be fun to watch, but the holes they dig are just waiting to snap your ankle.

As we start to see warmer weather and the foliage starts to wake up from a Winter sleep, gopher and squirrel populations take off like a rocket.

So to keep running children safe and the park grounds intact, Bakersfield has to limit the numbers of animals.

"It's not just the aesthetics. It truly can be an issue. You know, people trying to enjoy the park and have to navigate around squirrel's holes. We try to cover them up, but sometimes it does get very challenging," said Greg Cronk, Park Supervisor.

Methods the city has used in the past are no longer deemed safe to use at a public park, so they have been trying to come up with new ways.

"We are experimenting with contractors bringing in different devices. We use concussive devices that coving up into the burrow, it shocks the burrow and never to be seen again. And, we have also been looking into a pressurized gaseous device," said Cronk.

The pressurized gas device pumps carbon monoxide into the burrows to collapse them and abate the animals. And, the city is buying its own equipment so it will no longer have to pay contractors.

In past years when the Kern River was full of water, it pushed many of the squirrels and gophers from the once dry river bed into nearby parks.

The city estimates it costs taxpayers in the tens of thousands of dollars every year to fight the issue.

& where did you take the tree squirrels? Didn't that upset the ecosystem where they were released? Also why did you need to relocate them, after all they were there first (in your property), you shouldn't have been there destroying their habit by having the property in the first place. BTW, tree rats are a bit different than the ground squirrels, they don't destroy parks by making holes that people & pets trip in & then those people can sue the city for not taking care of the property.

DR999, to me, these animals are not pests - humans are far worse. I personally safe-trapped about 60 roof rats this past summer - no poisons, no explosions, or no other types of killing. I am just one person - and a person with a conscience. Does no one else have one? If most humans' first reaction is to kill everything, then I doubt we are the smartest species on the planet. These animals are being forced into cities more and more because of increases in habitat destruction caused by humans - why punish them for our mistakes?

sequoia5, those ground squirrels are basically large rats, but with bushy tails. They are pests. And to answer your question, "shall the people that litter be abated as well? I say yes.

Humans are really overpopulated and cause major damage to almost everything they touch - is death for overpopulated animals always the logical answer? Parks are supposed to be places to escape, at least for a moment, the confines and pressures of a city - being around nature is part of that experience. Personally, I find all the dirty baby diapers, the bathroom floors filled with fecal-laden toilet paper, and the trash dumped in the parks to be more of a problem than the squirrels and gophers - shall the people that litter be "abated" as well? What kind of morons would visit a park and complain about nature - which is the very thing a park is supposed to convey? No wonder why Bakersfield is continuously ranked as the most uneducated city in America - it is filled with morons, including the City who seems to think the best way to handle everything not human is to kill it.

I know a few people that would be more than happy to take care of the problem, but the state seems to think the Condor likes to eat lead, even wheel weights on the side of the road lol.

I live on just under 2 acres of land and was overrun with squirrels to the point that they were digging under my home foundation. Called an exterminator and they put down pellets and within less then 4 weeks I had no more squirrel problems. They died off in their underground homes. It's been 3 years and not a single squirrel has decided to make my property their home. One of the biggest problems is that they can be relocated, but if left less than 50 miles from the original location, they will come back and continue to procreate again and again and again. There are also state regulations on what can and cannot be used to get rid of them so many of the solutions are now illegal.

The squirrels are also very dangerous to cyclists. They (the squirrels!) are the dumbest creatures out there- even lizards know to run AWAY from cyclists. Squirrels like to play "chicken" and run in front of cyclists at the last second. I have squished more than one that way. And if they get into the spokes, the cyclist is going head-over-handlebars.
