A freak accident on Highway 99 killed one person and injured two others Tuesday evening.

The Highway Patrol says a trailer that was being towed lost one of its wheels near California Avenue around 7:30 p.m.

"What we believe is a northbound truck and trailer lost its trailer wheel. The trailer wheel jumped the center divider and collided with the blue Jeep. We believe it hit the driver," said Sgt. Marvin Casey, CHP.

There were two passengers in the Jeep. They were taken to the hospital with moderate to major injuries.

The CHP says the driver of the truck and trailer was unaware the wheel had struck someone. And, he was visibly distraught after learning what happened.

The side of the truck says Kirkes Electric, which is a company based in Turlock, California.

No word on whether any charges will be filed or citations issued against the driver of the truck or the company.

Depends on the service records, everytime we had an accident DOT went over our records and inspected the rig. We got lucky a few times when we had one mechanic that didn't know what he was doing and we lost three sets of wheels in less than 6 months, I tired everyday to get the company to let him go before some one got killed, they decided after the third time that maybe he needed a new line of work!
