'Tis the season of giving and it started early Wednesday morning outside the TV-17 studios, with folks stopping by 22nd and L Streets to donate what they could. Serrenia Lawrence, donated food. "Just a turkey and some extra food I had laying around," she said.
Leticia Delcid donated cash and food and even got others to pitch in. "I got $120 worth of groceries. I called four of my girlfriends this morning to match what I was going to spend. Then I went to Bolles Nursery and they donated $50," said Delcid.
All of the food donated will go to the Kern County Food Bank, which helps thousands of hungry people in our community each month, many who have lost jobs and are struggling in a tough economy. "It's a very, very sad year and it's getting worse and we all have to remember the people that are struggling, having very, very hard times right now," Delcid added.
But with your help, the holiday season can be a lot heartier for everyone. "One time or another we all need someone to help us. As long as we give we always get something back in return," daid food donor Jim Upton.
As of 6:30pm Wednesday, Aprroximately 30 tons of food had been donated and enough cash to purchase 60 tons more. The total is a record for the food drive, which is in its 10th year.
