First human Swine flu case in Kern County

Kern County Health officials say a 15-month-old resident of Ridgecrest has been diagnosed with swine flu.  The case was not hospitalized and has fully recovered. 

There is no concern over exposure to a daycare as the case is cared for in the home.  The family was advised by their pediatrician to remain at home until the case and any household members were without evidence of any respiratory infection. 

The following is the news release from the Kern County Department of Public Health: 

Bakersfield - Today, a 15 month old resident of Ridgecrest has been confirmed as a case of Swine flu (Novel Influenza A H1N1). The case was not hospitalized and has fully recovered. There is no concern over exposure to a daycare as the case is cared for in the home. The family was advised by their pediatrician to remain at home until the case and any household members were without evidence of any respiratory infection. The family has followed these instructions and there are no other known cases at this time. The Kern County Department of Public Health is investigating the case to determine the source and potential extent of exposure.

In order to prevent the spread of Swine Flu and other types of influenza, the Kern County Department of Public Health would like to remind the public to:

• Wash your hands before and after touching your eyes, nose or mouth;
• If you have to cough, cough into a disposable Kleenex or into the crook of your arm; and
• If you are sick, stay home and avoid exposing other people.
