Gabriel Gurrola can't hold back the tears thinking of his 26-year-old brother Abel Gurrola, who he says police shot just after midnight.

“I see my brother died in front of my eyes,” Gurrola said. “While he has a bullet hole that went through his cheek, came back through his head and went to his brain and his spinal cord."

Gurrola says he and his brother Abel fired no more than six shots towards an open field near his apartment at 720 Terrace Way in south Bakersfield.

“It was just a New Year's thing you know,” he says. “I didn't know it was going to take my brother's life."

Bakersfield Police say they got calls of several shots fired in the area, and when they arrived, they found Gurrola holding a rifle.

"Officers identified themselves as police officers and ordered the suspect to drop the rifle,” says Michaela Beard of the Bakersfield Police Department. “He refused and fled from them, a foot pursuit ensued, during which an officer-involved shooting occurred."

Police say officers shot Abel Gurrola, and he was taken to the hospital with major injuries. Rosemary Lopez has six children with Abel Gurrola, they have been together for 14 years, and she says she is devastated that Gurrola has brain damage.

"There’s no seeing his smile, no hearing his laugh, no arguing with him, it’s just me alone," Lopez says.

Their youngest child is five months old.

“I don’t even know how I’m going to tell my kids,” she says. “They can’t hug him anymore and say daddy I love you.”

Abel Gurrola had several run-ins with the law. He pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm in 2007 and was only out of prison for a month after violating parole.

“Everybody's a criminal, anybody can be a criminal, it’s a crime to spit on somebody,” Gabriel Gurolla says. “But a cop can take somebody's life, and they just get a stripe or something, that's all they’re going to do, we all know that, Bakersfield is known for that."

Gurrola says their family is from Los Angeles. They are staying with him at the hospital.
No officers were injured in the shooting. Police are still investigating.

Devillish not sure if you read this but Allen Vienneau (the guy that was shot on Allen by deputy Kraft)stated in a jalhouse interview "I wish I would have taken is life". Don't get me wrong (I have isses with the Bakersfied Putz Dept no doing their jobs) but when a suspect ets sht & then says tht in an interview it means the cop was nice by not killing the guy that wanted to take his life. BTW here is a link to the comments I refered to by Vienneau. www.kget.com/news/local/story/Shooting-video-released/FT5qh0Qas0Oywf8LCTU70g.cspx

Uh oh Devilish, looks like the hypocrite in you is shining through! You try and call me out for supposedly insulting you, and then you come out with that less than clever spin on DR999's name. Nice bud. I also forgot you were there for the entire event. Please tell me more about how you know everything that happened. You seem to be the resident expert on this event. Take your blinders off. It's a big bad world out there, people live and people die. Abel chose not to comply. Abel chose to run. Abel chose to shoot his gun that night. Abel chose to commit the crimes that resulted in his felon and parolee statuses. Abel chose to possess that firearm as a felon. Abel made a lot of poor choices Tuesday morning. They added up, and that's what happened. Abel carved his own path.

Lmao I am literally astounded reading these comments. A foot chase. He had a weapon . the officers felt threatened which is why he was shot in the face. I can't wait til the fact come out and oh they will. And I am so happy they all got home to their families although Abel didn't. He shot a gun in the air. He was brutally murdered for being who he was not for shooting a gun in the air. Didn't any of them wanna fight they wanted to kill. He only wanted to spend the new year with his brother and father instead they are viewing his body in the hospital where he lay for hours before they released his passing. I can only thank god his organs will live through 7 other human beings in need of them. He saved 7 lives by his death. Or no wait, through your eyes the officers saved 7 lives right? Judgment day is coming we will all have to answer. I would hate to be the one who shot him while his staring dead at him.

devilish, I wouldn't call him a father. Real fathers don't spend most of their adult life, even at age 26, in and out of jail, state prison, and being out in society on parole or probation. The odds are his sons would have followed in his criminal footsteps, and his daughters would have been having babies out of wedlock by age 14. Abel Gurrola was nothing but a sperm donor.

Ignorance is passed down by judgment. In case that is where you would come in. You decided to reply to my comment at someone else so I could care less if you get my point. I have no desire to argue with someone who insists on using insults as a tactic in getting me to back down. If you wanna continue to play ring around the rosy with me we can do that. I may have to occasionally step out for a few moments but I shall return. And my point is (and I am already assuming you will argue and debate and insult my point just on mere spite and dominance issues) that the viewers here are not getting the full story they are getting what was told to be shared. But since I can't prove that I still wanted to throw it in the air in hopes that even one person will know there was more to what really happen. A 26year old father of 6 is gone and you seem to be elated. Almost makes me wonder.

If you cannot see your bias in your comments then you a far beyond my ability to teach you. I have no tolerance for the ignorant, sorry. Just scroll through this comment section and look at proudamerican, DR999 and nevergiveup's comments, as well as others. That should point you in the right direction. To comment on your post as I was typing this; I am not saying it was right to shoot him for using dope. Considering that's not what happened, I don't think anybody is. However, I am saying it was fair game for him to be shot right when he assaulted the second deputy. I'm also confused as to where anybody denied there was a second shooting by the same deputy. Many law enforcement officers have had more than one shooting in their career, I'm afraid I don't see what your point is.
