BAKERSFIELD, CA - Two Bakersfield College students who were best friends died in a crash over the weekend. Police say 31-year-old Severo Ramirez and 33-year-old Leonel Del Toro were broadsided by an SUV at Columbus Street and University Avenue around 8:30 Saturday morning.

Both Del Toro and Ramirez died at the scene.

Friends say both men were members of the Mecha Club at BC and Del Toro was also on the BC football team. Friday, their friends held a car wash to help with funeral expenses.

Ramirez's girlfriend and roommate say they still can't believe he's gone.

"He was really kind-hearted, he listened to everybody, always had opinions. He was real sweet, always tried to make everyone smile and laugh," said Ramirez's girlfriend Amanda Flores.

"Just by chance favors meeting the guy, he touches your life. He did that a lot with a lot of people," said Ramirez's roommate Richard Villanueva.

The driver of the SUV has been identified as 35-year-old Felicitas Mendoza who had two kids with her in the SUV at the time. They were sent to the hospital with complaints on pain.

Officers don't believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash but police are still asking for witnesses to contact them at 661-327-7111.
