BAKERSFIELD, CA - Kern County and Bakersfield City Fire Departments are battling over money. The Californian reports the county insists the city is getting overpaid its share of property tax revenue.
Under an agreement, the closest fire crew responds to emergencies, even if that means a city truck has to go to an area traditionally covered by the county.
The county is supposed to reimburse the city for this, but County Administrator Jon Nilon says the county has overpaid Bakersfield between a million and three million dollars.
County administrators also are unhappy they're paying the city for fire protection of churches and hospitals even though the county doesn't collect property taxes for those entities.
A legal battle could be the next step if both sides don't come to an agreement.
