The results of toxicology reports on Garces High graduate Philip Dhanens were released Monday.

The Fresno County Coroner's office says 18-year-old Phillip Dhanens died of complications from acute alcohol poisoning.

Dhanens' blood alcohol level was .36 at the time of his death.

"In this case we had the swelling of the brain. Also, he could have had some aspiration. So, that's why we are calling it complications following alcohol consumption," said Dr. Venu Gopal, Fresno County Coroner/Pathologist.

Dhanens was a couple of weeks into his first year of college when he pledged with the Theta Chi Fraternity.

On August 31st, he went to a party at an off-campus fraternity house. Two days later, Dhanens died at a hospital.

"The amount of alcohol that it takes to cause death can vary depending on the individual's prior experience and biologics. But, in this case it was enough," said Dr. David Hadden, Fresno County Coroner.

The Coroner's office said they tested Dhanens for drugs, but didn't find any in his system.

Dhanens was a popular graduate of Bakersfield's Garces High School. He was crowned prom king in May and was known as "Big Phil."

Dhanens used his 6'5", 325-pound size as a nose tackle to help the Rams to the Valley Championship game last year.

"It breaks your heart when you see a young man full of promise succumb to the toxic effect of alcohol," said Hadden.

Since Dhanens' death, the Theta Chi Fraternity has been suspended by Fresno State, as well as the fraternity's national charter.
