Tyice Morsette contacted everyone from Medicare to the independent contractor who came to her home to the medical supply company she uses.  She's losing patience waiting for a wheelchair that her daughter needs to get around.

Ebony Ramirez was paralyzed in a car accident in 2003. Since then her mother, Tyice Morsette, has been her caregiver. When Ebony is not in her bed her mom has to place her in a wheelchair. The problem is Ebony has outgrown this chair. She needs a bigger one.

They were paid over $20,000 for a chair.  That figure is what Morsette is referring to in these documents. The documents show Mobility Plus Equipment billed Medicare for a new electric chair back in January. That was after a contractor came out to her home and fitted her daughter for the chair.

"Anyway he did come up here, measured Ebony and left. That's the last time I had seen him talk to him or anything." says Morsette.

Months passed, Morsette suspected fraud and began making some calls. "I called them. And I reported fraud from him, I reported it to Medicare. I called Dr. Davis' office and talked the nurse there that does Ebony's stuff, and I called Channel 17."

We called Mobility Plus, the company that was hand written on the medical equipment specialist's business card. A name "Sherry" was written as well.

A company representative told us Sherry no longer works there. The rep says Ebony Ramirez's account was on file, and that the chair is now scheduled for delivery this Saturday.

Meanwhile, Tyice says her daughter's already challenged life is compromised, while they wait for her wheelchair to be delivered.

"It's very disgraceful, I mean very disgraceful. She depends on a wheelchair. I can't lift her and put her in a wheelchair, like we're sitting in a chair she can't do that."

Mobility Plus says the company tried delivering the chair a few weeks ago, but had the wrong address. As for the contractor, he emailed me back telling me he no longer works with Mobility Plus. We will follow up to see if the company follows through on its promise for the Saturday delivery.

Rereading this story, which is a little hard to follow (for my limited comprehension, I guess) I now realize that "they" is Mobility plus. So medicare paid them 20K already? I don't understand why the reporter didn't contact Mobility Plus in person for answers. Or are they out of town, in which case, I wonder why a local doctor wouldn't recommend a local medical equipment provider.

I see the logic of renting the chairs for 12 months. Some people don't need them longer than that for one reason or another. Why put out that much money for something that can then be sold? Don't know the resale value on used wheel chairs, but it must be a lot or people would just buy used. I guess my Dad who just passed away in 2010 didn't even think to apply to medicare. His wasn't a luxury model and it was purchased personally.

I researched medicare today on this and what did I find? Medicare stop buying these types of wheelchairs starting with January of 2011, Medicare will only rent these chairs on a 12 month contract now. So this $20,000 bill to medicare was filed a little late to get approved.

A wheelchair for $20,000? I have checked the prices on wheelchairs since in the near future I'm going to be needing one, it would have to be top of the line chair to cost this much, can't see medicare paying for it because they already told me they will have a limit when I apply, maybe it's because I have been a middle class working man all my life!!!!!!!

Another case where the tax payer is getting the shaft. The news clip kept showing the Jazzy1650, Google Jazzy1650 and there's several suppliers that sell it for $7799.00. For #20,000 was it sent to Carol Shelby's plant in Vegas to be customized? It will now do 0 to 90 in 3.5 seconds, top speed of 200mph, head lights and tail lights with a locomotive air horn? Better be something extra added to come up almost three times what it should cost.
