Conservative groups are calling on the Board of Supervisors to stop same-sex marriage licenses from being issued in the county.

Kern County Clerk Ann Barnett announced wedding ceremonies would no longer be performed at the county building after the California Supreme Court ruled that same sex couples could be married.

Since the ruling, some residents want the Board of Supervisors to create a county ordinance that would nullify the California Supreme Court's decision.

After Barnett's announcement, weddings would no longer be performed at the county building.

That came after California's Supreme Court refused to set aside its decision legalizing same-sex marriages.

Conservative Kern County residents have rallied behind Barnett in hopes of making the controversy front and center at Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting.

Ken Mettler from the Bakersfield Republican Assembly said, "It's not in the best interest of our society to have same sex marriages. It erodes the institution of marriage."

Mettler said he's speaking on behalf of concerned residents and the Bakersfield Republican Assembly in calling on county supervisors to create an ordinance that would prohibit the issuing of same-sex marriage licenses until California voters have the opportunity to overturn the Supreme Court's decision in November.

Mettler said, "We are asking our supervisors, who have sworn to uphold the constitution and to uphold the will of the people. Laws are to be made by the people, not by the judges."

Supervisor Don Maben said he also plans to bring up the same-sex marriage issue at Tuesday's board meeting.

Maben said, "I will ask for a referral of another county department to perform the ceremonies."

Maben said he will call for change and hopes to find a county department that can marry all couples.

"Republicans are vying to actually obstruct what the court has ruled, that is frankly UnAmerican and against everything our nation stands for, that is disgusting for someone to prospose." Didn't the people of Kalifonistan vote against gay marraige with prop 22? now the judges obstruct what we voted on. THAT IS UNAMERICAN!!!, after all isn't it by the people & for the people. Now our vote doesn't mean squat, that needs to be taught in our schools, don't waste your time voting, 7 judges in the bay area will just change what you voted on.

Football Lady, the Supreme court decision doesn't force any church to marry anyone. This is civil marriage and Kern County wants to violate the law. If Kern County has decided to interfere with the churches then they are not only in violation of the law but also of forcing their illegal decisions on churches. Seems to me that that the county board should be sanctioned for their illegal and immoral behavior.

Football Lady; The law does no such thing. A pastor can refuse to marry anyone. Hetrosexual or homosexual. This law will have absolutely no impact on the church. This is just evangelical religious hysteria. Our government should not be in the business of legislating morality. It goes against every grain of the First Amendment. I guess we should tear up the Bill of Rights because the majority of Californians voted to do such a few years ago. The courts exist to protect the minority against the tyranny of the majority.

No one seems to understand how far reaching this Court decision is. No Church official can marry anyone, unless they agree to marry all, including same sex couples. Most Christians & their Pastors believe homosexuality is a sin! This ruling forces Churches to sanctify sin! Therefore most will no longer perform the Sacrament of Marriage! Is this God's will? I don't think so!

God doesn't need government's help. Respect the Bill of Rights. Get real...and lets get to work on some REAL problems people. This is a fruitless battle.

A County Board of Supervisors' ordinance does not trump a State Supreme Court decision. If the Board wants to pretend they are judges of California law, then they need to establish themselves as a separate government - not in California. This is lawlessness. Mettler, like mayor Newsome, needs to take his case to the Supreme Court, or wait for the November ballot election. His actions now, like Barnett's indicates they know they have already lost, both ways. Does Kern County want to form a government like Iran?

When the mayor of San Francisco issued marriage licenses in 2004 to same-sex couples he was stopped by the court. He violated the Constitution because this action was not a duty he could exercise. An ordinance by a county board, in defiance of the state Constitution, goes beyond mere objecting. The county board is saying Kern is no longer a county in California where the Constitution of the state is uniformly applied. Who was most lawless and destructive of Constitutional government? A mayor or the Kern County Board? The County Board has its remedy, in November. Is there some real, immediate threat that prevents them from following the lawing and waiting for the vote in November?

Too bad Mr. Mettler has so many problems with the judicial process in this country. From the looks of things he would be MUCH happier in Iran or some other theocracy where he can hide his personal prejudice behind religion and discriminate against others as he pleases. Growing up in the segregated south, I saw too many of his kind in similar offices. Fortunately, like the dinosaurs, they too are pretty much extinct. Time for the residents of Kern County to have a recall so that Mr. Mettler can be free to pursue his religion without the bother of public office

Ken Mettler clearly does not understand the difference between the legal term "marriage" and the religious term "Sacrament of Marriage." Sad that the people of Kern County have a representative that is so confused. Mettler needs to go back and study the law before he tries to impose a theocracy on the good people of Kern County.

Let me see: If I marry my partner of 7 years, suddenly traditional marriage is threatened? Give me a break. Ken Mettler clearly wants a theocracy in Kern County-he could care less what it says in the Constitution about equal rights for all. Ken Mettler should be KICKED OUT of office. He needs to go to work in the Vatican. He does NOT deserve to represent the people of Kern County if he cannot abide by the law and support equal civil rights for EVERYONE.
