Oscar Encinas is only 16 years old, but his achievements in public service have earned him a prestigious award from the State of California.
Thursday night Encinas and others came together in Greenfield to spread awareness about staying healthy, and giving back so that children can flourish in the community.
"I have helped build a walking path. I have helped design a playground," says Encinas.
Now he wants to help his community to continue to improve in other ways, such as eating habits.
One goal is to try and bring down the level of obesity among children.
"I think the more the family is involved, the better it is for the kids," says Charlie Rodriguez, who attended the seminar. "The better it is for mom and dad, the better it is for the economy, the better it is for education."
Encinas wants to help improve school safety as well.
But he also wants people to know the power of a community coming together to want to make their lives better.
"It proves that we can stay united and accomplish anything we set our minds to," says Encinas.
Thursday was the fourth meeting so far.
Other meetings have already occurred in Arvin, Lamont, and Weedpatch.
The last big event will be Saturday, February 20th at Ollivier Middle School.
