$35,000 for Kern County's Make-A-Wish Foundation and still counting.

That's the latest tally from Wednesday's "Heroes and Helmets for Hope" fundraiser.

City and county firefighters hit the streets long before the sun came up.

Dozens of volunteers, including several children who've benefited from the non-profit in the past, assisted in efforts to raise money to make wishes come true for children living with life-threatening conditions.

"There's a certain vibe here that I just love because everyone's volunteering their time. The firefighters, the employees for PG&E, everyone's stepped up because they want to help make a wish," said Catherine Anspach, Executive Director, Make-A-Wish Foundation.

All day long, city firefighters worked the downtown area outside the 17 News studios, where Roadhouse Grill was serving up barbecue lunches for the effort.

County firefighters worked the corners of Stockdale Highway and Gosford Road.
