Audrey Chavez went into the hospital Monday, suffering from internal bleeding. Now those who've worked closely with Chavez are stepping up to raise money and the spirits of a woman loved by so many.
They started a campaign called Flowers for Audrey. Longtime friend Amber Beeson says Chavez is not one to ever ask for anything, so Beeson is stepping in and asking for help raising money for Chavez' recovery, as well as beautifying Ricky's Retreat, the site of so much of Audrey's work.
Beeson is asking people to visit the website, flower-power-fundraising, and buy flowers to either send to Audrey, or keep for themselves. Fifty percent of what you pay, goes back to the Bakersfield AIDS Project. "I think during her recovery she is going to need a lot more assistance, so whether that is going to be funds or in kind contributions, so since my project is based around gardens, I'm hoping to donate a whole new garden for Valentine's Day for Audrey here at Ricky's Retreat."
Those who know her best have also organized a blood drive at Houchin Blood Bank in Bakersfield. Chavez' blood type is A+.
People showed up to the blood bank Tuesday to donate, but more is needed.
The blood drive continues through February 9.
