The Bakersfield City Council voted Wednesday evening to expand the number of tow truck companies that have contracts with the city.
In a 4-3 vote, the six existing companies that have a contract with the city will be joined by four more companies, beginning in two years.
Then, every five years, each company, including the original six, have to re-apply to the city.
"I was very happy with what they came up with," says Nancy Barnett.
Her tow company is one of the original six.
"Ten companies is better than 15 companies," says Barnett. "It's something I can deal with a little bit better."
One tow truck owner outside the original six still was not pleased with the outcome, saying the field should be expanded further.
"They only go with a few companies, and they never give an opportunity to nobody," says Alonzo Mendoza. "It's a big monopoly."
The new plan requires all companies be within city limits within the next two years, and that includes the original six.
