We have an update on First 5 Kern Executive Director Wendy Wayne and her fight against non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Thursday, Wayne was in Los Angeles receiving chemotherapy treatment at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, and instead of sending her flowers or cards, Wayne wants everyone to simply perform a random act of kindness.

Some local children are already being inspired to turn Wayne’s wishes into actions.

Some young boys and girls will wake up early Friday to set up a lemonade stand.

All proceeds will go to Homeless Quarters, a non-profit organization that keeps people off the streets and in their homes.

"Well we've done lots, donated to charities in the past and stuff, but Wendy Wayne, she really was like an advocate for children, so we wanted to do this because of her mostly," said 14-year-old Ali Castellanos.

For Wayne and her husband, they’re overwhelmed by the response from people all over the community who are being kind to others.

"The response has been surprising even to me and to Wendy, and it certainly has helped her tremendously in this time of going through chemotherapy and having to heal her body," said Castellanos.

As Wayne continues to fight, her husband, Gene Tackett, feels the kindness we do for one another never has to stop.

"I think the world can handle an unlimited amount of acts of kindness, especially today with all of the things that are going on,” he said. “If we can increase that with an unknown amount of acts of kindness, I know Wendy will be very, very happy."

The lemonade stand will take place Friday at 10 a.m.

It will be held near Madison Grove Park on Raincheck and Norris, about a half mile west of Calloway.
