Felony criminal charges were filed against Anna Marie Reynosa, 20, the driver who allegedly was using her cell phone when she was involved in a fatal accident April 14. Reynosa was arrested Thursday morning.

The charge --- vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence – carries a prison term as its harshest sentence, but a shorter term in jail also is possible.

Reynosa is accused of killing 20-year-old Charla Wilkins in an accident at Jewetta Avenue and Reina Road.

Wilkins was riding a motorcycle and was stopped at the intersection when she was rear-ended.
Witnesses told police Reynosa never hit the brakes and was using her cell phone at the time of the crash.

Police said Reynosa had been drinking before the accident, but was not above the legal limit for drivers 21 and older. Because she was under 21, however, the law prohibits her to drive with any alcohol in her system.

The death prompted a large outpouring of support, including rallies and vigils, for the Wilkins family. Friends and relatives of the victim called on police and prosecutors to file charges.

No court date has been set for Reynosa.

This story is so unnerving since this Anna character so blatantly drove carelessly. Driving buzzed and talking on your cell phone while driving at night is such a stupid thing to do! I cannot believe it took so long to get this girl behind bars so she cannot hurt another family!

let's try this again since this computer is doing weird things...FYI RVLADY I have had a relative killed on a motorcycle by guess what? A drunk driver and what happened to her...nothing just a slap on the hand it seems as though money can make things like getting in your Porsche and driving to Pismo in the middle of night drunk, passing on a curve and hitting a motorcycle head-on go away!!! My point was she did not murder someone she killed someone...and yes I am smart....I know the difference between murder and manslaughter.

RVLADY they can't charge her with murder....look up manslaughter vs. murder. Yes she did kill someone but she did not set out with the intent to kill someone. I'm not saying what she did was okay nor am I saying she should not be charged but she should and is being charged correctly. Just wish people wouldn't spout off when they obviously don't know what the law or charges are :)

NO PLEA DEAL! It's time that our legal system actually holds people 100% responsible for the wrongs they do. In this case, this woman broke multiple laws and as a result she KILLED someone. If she is given the maximum on each charge, consecutivly then maybe others will think twice before doing the same types of things. As long as our legal system continues to allow plea deals or judges hand out slap on the wrist penalties no one will even care.
