Felony criminal charges were filed against Anna Marie Reynosa, 20, the driver who allegedly was using her cell phone when she was involved in a fatal accident April 14. Reynosa was arrested Thursday morning.
The charge --- vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence – carries a prison term as its harshest sentence, but a shorter term in jail also is possible.
Reynosa is accused of killing 20-year-old Charla Wilkins in an accident at Jewetta Avenue and Reina Road.
Wilkins was riding a motorcycle and was stopped at the intersection when she was rear-ended.
Witnesses told police Reynosa never hit the brakes and was using her cell phone at the time of the crash.
Police said Reynosa had been drinking before the accident, but was not above the legal limit for drivers 21 and older. Because she was under 21, however, the law prohibits her to drive with any alcohol in her system.
The death prompted a large outpouring of support, including rallies and vigils, for the Wilkins family. Friends and relatives of the victim called on police and prosecutors to file charges.
No court date has been set for Reynosa.
