Catholics are upset over a new health insurance policy of the Obama Administration that requires employers to cover contraception and abortion as part of preventive care for their employees.

Critics say the mandate will force Catholic employers, including dozens of hospitals, to choose between providing health care and betraying their religious beliefs.

"If we pay for those services for people who work for us, then in effect we're saying, 'well don't do it,' but then giving the money to pay for it," said Bishop David Ricken.

The policy goes into effect August 1 of this year.  Employers that don't provide contraceptive coverage due to religious beliefs will have an extra year to comply.  New York's archbishop said in a statement that the Obama Administration was giving Catholics "a year to figure out how to violate their consciences."

By forcing Catholics to comply to this new change, you're asking them to violate their religious beliefs. Catholics are being asked to cave on their religious freedoms in order to please this new change. It should be their right to choose what kind of coverage they want. There are in fact some Catholics who do use birth control and contraceptives, but that is their choice. By not making it a choice, you're killing their freedom to decide. The First Amendment gives us religious freedom, it's one of the bases of our country. We were seeking religious freedom from the English king, now we're being denied the very freedom we sought after. That is why this is wrong. Don't ask them to pay for something is against their belief, it's like asking a Muslim to go to a Christian service, they won't because it's not their faith. His reform to health care is a giant step backwards for our great nation. I only hope that whoever comes into office next rights this wrong.

It's not like they would use it, catholics don't believe in that stuff. The younger generation perhaps, but then maybe babies will stop having babies. Actually babies should stop having sex, but that's not going to happen anytime soon.

Grow a Pair, After reading your comment,"As has been the habit of our illegal alien POTUS, we are entitled to nothing unless our muslim, commie president says its ok." I know now exactly what kind of nut I'm am dealing with. Your ignorance completely loses any rational argument you can make. The employer only has to pay the taxes, he/she doesn't have to worry about what services the employees choose. It is none of his/her business. Employers pay taxes that build nuclear bombs. Why don't they worry about that.

sevenbates-since when is murder considered medicine. Its time for Americans to take a stand against this modern day holocaust liberals call medicine. What's next? Washington forcing employers to cover marijuana prescriptions? Abortion, in a majority of cases isn't a medical necessity-it is a lifestyle decision and, unless the mother's life is at eminent risk, about as medically necessary as botox!

Murph-it seem like you only read the word 'Catholic' in the title and went off on an anti catholic rant. This is about Obama cramming his pro choice agenda down company's throats against their conscience.

Businesses in the United States of America are not allowed to prohibit access to medical care for any employee based on their religious feelings on the matter, unless the employee is specifically tasked with religious duties. This keeps the government from forcing (for example)a baptist church to hire a catholic priest, because of the "equal opportunity" laws. Your feelings on the matter, with respect to religion, have nothing to do with the law. The labor laws for all businesses apply to all employees. If you don't want to have employees subject to these federal protections, then you only hire employees tasked with religious duties, whom you can be selective with and discriminate against as you see fit.

Catholics have no problems telling their people to keep having children, keep increasing their race, over populate the earth and keep getting welfare to raise them but let the source of that welfare speak and they get upset, poor babies if they do not like it leave!!!!!!!

synisterkat-get help! So much for the 'choice' mantra. Employers don't have the choice of not paying for a service they find morally deplorable. As has been the habit of our illegal alien POTUS, we are entitled to nothing unless our muslim, commie president says its ok.

A lot is a piece of real estate and last I checked August should be capitalized. Once again I find myself so appalled by the lack of attention to detail that I am completely disinterested in the actual story. Sad.
