A number of vehicles have been stolen from the parking lot at Bakersfield College this month. The latest theft happened Wednesday morning.

All of the vehicles taken from BC have been Hondas. According to police, it's a popular car and can be easily stolen.

Four students have walked out to the parking lot after class this month, only to find their Hondas, gone.

BC Spokeswoman Amber Chiang, says it happens at the beginning of every semester.

With 16,000 students coming and going and wide open parking lots, thieves have a lot to choose from.

"We're really trying to get the word out so students understand that they need to take care of their property and protect it. Don't crack the windows, don't leave anything of value there to be seen, just really try to make your car unappetizing to potential thieves," said Chiang.

"A lot of them are going to chop shops and getting chopped up, if you will,l for parts. And, parts are getting sold to build more vehicles. They're taking some from others and putting them together to build more vehicles and get them back on the road," said Sgt. Joe Grubbs, Bakersfield Police Department.

Three cars have also been stolen from Cal State Bakersfield this month.

Bakersfield police and the CHP both have task forces and are working to put chop shops out of business.

In a four-month period last year, ten chop shops in Kern County were shut down and more than two dozen people arrested.

Bakersfield College plans to step up its parking lot patrols to try and deter thieves from targeting the campus.

2carpoor, I agree with you, the school should be able to afford security to drive around the campus parking lot. Especially because they now charge $5/day parking. With all the classes they cut, you would think they would have the money to fund parking lot security. It just shows you where their priorities are when they just tell students "make your car as unappetizing as possible". Your dealing with criminals!!

Are parking permits free now? Certainly a minimum wage work-study program should be able to pay for someone on bikes with cameras to tape/film illicit activity to slow this stuff down. If the solar panels are actually working they could generate some cash.
