Burglaries are on the rise in Bakersfield up 15 percent just in the last year but communities are not sitting idle. They're forming neighborhood watch programs at record levels hoping to help police catch the criminals.

Gabriel Hernandez and his mother live in a quiet east Bakersfield neighborhood.

"They attempted to break in by kicking our door down," said Hernandez.

That was Monday night. Fortunately the burglars didn't take anything.

"When they tried to kick open the door I don't think they were strong enough to break through," said Hernandez.

Unfortunately the burglars did break into a house two doors down. That's why Saturday morning neighbors organized a neighborhood watch meeting with the Bakersfield Police Crime Prevention unit.

"We have had so many people on this street moving in and out where we didn't know anybody and I wanted to get to know so we can take care of each other," said Brenda Twist who's lived in the neighborhood since the 1990's.

Bakersfield Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Tony Martinez said others across the city feel the same with dozens of neighborhood watches popping up just in the last year.

"In the start of the year I could say we had 810 neighborhood watch programs," said Martinez. "As we followed through the year we were doing anywhere from 4 to 6 of these neighborhood watch programs every week."

The interest may be because of the increase in burglaries. According to the Bakersfield Police Department in 2012 there were 4, 994 burglaries up 15.6 percent since last year.

"We have so many calls for service that they can't respond to all calls and when we do it might be to a call that we received two to three hours earlier," said Martinez.

Martinez said a neighborhood watch program helps police catch the burglars.

"We know that 90% of of the burglars that we apprehend is because somebody calls us from a neighborhood and is watching out for the neighbor," said Martinez.

The program also helps with prevention sending a strong message like this neighborhood sent Saturday.

"Stay out because we're watching," said Eddie Rubin at the meeting. "We're taking care of one another".

Martinez said burglars are targeting homes between Union and H Street, south of White Lane.

If you would like to start a neighborhood watch program, call 326-3922.

People wake up overall crime has dropped every year for the past 20years, violent crime, and gun related cases. Check your public records at the official f.b.i. site. This prison realignment crap is doing just what it was made to do. Break the supposedly already broke counties.(look up c.a.f.r.)And put the hard core criminals back on the street. The fear factor. Then they can take more of our freedoms away. And cause civil unrest to impose their marshal law. There are hundreds of brand new prisons built and empty, all a crossed the nation. They just call them reeducation camps and f.e.m.a. camps and so on. Put them in them. Hell no those are for you. It’s all 1 big dog and pony show. And if you get your facts from the talking head sock puppets. The mainstream media you might as well be reading 1 of those Hollywood magazines at the check out counter. Are republic is gone. Been taken over by sun worshipping pagan U.N. globalist elitist n.w.o. wake up. This is all by design. Use your head and do your own homework while you still can. They will be taken over the net as we know it.And it’s are last means of open honest debate on truth not propaganda past down by corporate giants. And they will do it all in the name of saving us. From some made up boogieman.no your real history not his-story please are children’s future is at stake

Pete- last time I checked, BPD is way understaffed, underpaid & overworked for what they have to deal with, not only from ungrateful, disrespectful citizens like YOU, but from the city managers who they protect as well. And because of that, they are losing officers left & right to other cities who ACTUALLY give a rats ass about the men & women putting their lives on the line everyday & night to protect their city. If you don't like the BPD or are complaing because they took a little longer than you wanted then you wanted them to write a report, please do us all a favor & DON'T call them the next time you need help. Handle it yourself!! That way when someone who actually has an emergency & appreciates our officers, can have an officer to them as soon as possible. Like DR999 said, glad you are moving out of this state!!

pete, based on what you describe, your house was BURGLARIZED, not robbed. And you call the police uneducated? And I call BS to your story. Even though the police may have a delay to take a simple residential burglary report, it's NOT a 3 day wait, especially if you call 7 times. You are making that up or not giving all the true facts. Glad you are moving out of this state. We already have enough stupid living here.

This story is a joke, The police in this city could care less if you get robbed ,case in point i was robbed last may by this Mexican punk who lived with his grandma. I was out of town and the dirty waste of skin thought it would be cool to rob his grandma's neighbor (me) So upon returning home and finding my house ransacked and all my electronics stolen along with all my vital info ie birth cert.social security card etc I called the cops and the response i got from BPD was they are very busy and will try to get by my place to take a report. Over the course of the next 3 days i called 7 times and to this day have never seen BPD show up to take a report. My renters insurance would not pay for my loss with out that report, So not only do the worthless police in this city fail to respond to a crime they make it impossible to file a claim to get reimbursed for your loss.Bakersfield is a joke of a city and will always be the laughing stock of California, It is ran by uneducated people and it shows, I am so glad come April i will be moving out of Bakersfield and California for that matter this state and city are lost.

This article also states that these neighborhood watch programs are helping the police catch these criminals! I hope they are helping by having them picked up in body bags so that our great gov Brown can't let them out next week so they can try again!

Yes this article states burglaries but there has been a number of home invasion since these bastards do not care if anyone is home or not in most cases, if they can beat someone up or kill them it's a plus to these so called non violent scumbags! Sheriff Youngblood has stated most of these crimes have be related to the prison realignment but from what I have read our find gov Brown is planning on releasing thousands more for us to deal with!

ginny, the article is about BURGLARIES, which are considered non-violent crimes. Home invasion robberies are completely different. They are considered violent crimes because it involves actually robbing people inside their homes.
