Officers say a bulletproof vest saved Officer Dennis Eddy from serious injuries.

The officer is in stable condition at Kern Medical Center after having surgery Sunday morning.

Eddy was shot twice, once in the leg, and once in the chest.

Police credit the bulletproof vest for saving his life.

"We're very thankful that last night's incident wasn't more of a tragedy for our officer. He was actually shot twice, we thought just once in the leg, but he was actually just twice in the leg and then in the chest," said Sgt. Greg Terry, Bakersfield Police Department.

Officer Eddy has been with the department for six years.
