If life is just one long journey down a winding road then Darren Chaney and Malcolm Rivera are in the right spot.

The big brother and little brother spent the evening racing go carts in southwest Bakersfield just one of many outings they enjoy together.

"Him and I share a love for sports," said Chaney. We've been to Cal State Bakersfield basketball games, Bakersfield Blaze games."

The two met through the non-profit program more than a year ago.

"He is exactly like one of my friends at school, we joke around and have a good time," said Rivera.  Who, like Chaney didn't grow up with a father.

It's the reason Chaney got involved in the first place.

"I really didn't have that family atmosphere, but as much as we loved each other, there was something missing," said Chaney.
He along with other volunteers in the program work to fill that void.

They also mentor kids being raised by grandparents or children with parents in prison.

"There's a lot of children in tough situations that could really benefit from the friendships we provide them," said Gerardo Marquez who is working to pair more kids with big brothers and sisters.
