A group of local musicians is using its talents to bring awareness to the growing number of wounded soldiers returning home from war.

The band Von Cotton teamed up with the wounded heroes fund, to raise thousands of dollars for local families.

"But you don't know until you're in it," said Brant Cotton, lead singer of the band.

He wrote a song called "Soldiers Lullaby", it's one of five songs that is expected to be released on the album.

Cotton says he first got inspired for the project after playing for the troops abroad.

But it wasn't until recently when he and his band members headed into the recording studio at American Sound Recording in downtown Bakersfield.

"We've got very young men 19 to 20-year old men going over there, and coming back not necessarily in a good way." said Cotton.

That is the philosophy that has driven their latest project with the wounded heroes fund.

"It's surreal that we're in an actual recording studio," said Wendy Porter, the founder of the wounded heroes fund.

She watched Friday afternoon as the band recorded one of their songs.

The album is expected to hit the stores sometime soon.
