A Bakersfield man who took a plea deal for having sex with a minor, has been sentenced to one year in jail and three years probation. Matthew Hays, 21, will spend a year at the Kern County Jail.  Once released Hays will not be able to associate with minors or frequent places where they gather.

He also must undergo counseling and pay the victim an undisclosed amount of restitution.  Police say Hays had an ongoing sexual relationship with a 15-year old girl. The victim told police Hays communicated with her and exchanged explicit material with her on the Internet.

That all boils down to people who are either too young or too immature having kids. Young and immature parents want to be friends more often than parents. It is the parents job to have the common sense to keep their kids in line. As always kids push the limits but there needs to be a responsible adult there to be sure they do the right thing.

I have three teenage boys and I have had some girls show up at my house in the middle of the night trying to see them. They wear lowcut, tight clothing and kiss other girls in an effort to get the boys attention. I have seen them. I had a halloween party for my kids and their friends when they were in Jr High. I could not believe what some of the girls were wearing, one girl had on hot pants and her rear was hanging out the back. Their parents, mothers and FATHERS, were the ones dropping them off! We are all responsible for our own children. That girls parents and the girl all need to take some responsiblity for this mess. I know what goes on with teenage girls, I was one once. I had a friend that had sex with a boy and when her dad found out she claimed the boy raped her. I came to his defense because I knew she was lying. I promise to keep my boys in line if you all keep your needy, confused daughters home where they belong.

i went to high school with this adult man, and he has always been a creep who tried picking up on younger girls. this was the only girl who pressed charges, not because her family pressured her into it, but because he manipulated her into the relationship. and gypsy116 maybe her family and her didn't show up in court because it was emotionally hard to see this person who used their daughter. i'm glad this man has to pay for what he did to young impressionable children.

Wrong Markbsae I have a 26 year old daughter and of course Im over 30. Neither person is in the right but they should BOTH be held responsible

I can bet neither of you have kids (especially 15 year old girls) nor are you over 30 years old. Thereis definitely something wrong with a 19 year old who can't find someone to have a relationship that is at least 17. There is also something wrong the 15 year old girl who goes after a 19 year old or older (daddy issues) and her parents.

I feel the same way Gypsy.. Four years difference isnt that big of a deal. The girl needs to realize she is also at fault. Yes Markbsae, 19 is still a child.

Seriously? You think that a 15 year old should be treated as an adult? The man (19 and for sure legally an ADULT) had sex with a MINOR! There are reasons there are clear and distinct legal differences in the definition of minors vs adults.

First of all this sounds worse than it was. The girl had been the one sending him the explicit material of herself in emails and he asked her to stop. She consented to the sexual relations. Her family was the one that talked her into pressing charges. This is a case of kids being kids, yes I consider him a kid, she was 15 and he was 19 when this happened. She didnt even show up to court either. If it was so important her and her family should have been there. I believe the law needs to implement some type of punishment for these girls that behave this way as well. She was as much at fault for being promiscuous as he was for being in a relationship with a minor.
