A local congressman helped pen a bill that would prevent corporate recipients of federal bailout money from providing financial assistance to ACORN.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) co-sponsored a bill that also would require TARP fund recipients report to Congress any direct or indirect assistance they have provided ACORN over the last year.

ACORN is a community organizing group that has come under fire in recent videos produced by conservative activists.

Employees at ACORN's California offices were caught on camera appearing to advise a couple posing as a pimp and prostitute to lie about the woman's profession to get financial help for housing and about how to smuggle girls into the country.

"It's imperative that Congress continue to support legislation that promotes fiscal accountability and transparency to root out wasteful spending," Rep. McCarthy said in a news release. "That's why I've continued to support and vote for common sense legislation that protects Americans from wasteful ACORN funding, like this common-sense bill."

California Attorney General Jerry Brown says he is investigating ACORN in response to a request from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Scott Gerber, a spokesman for Brown, said the state will also look into the circumstances under which ACORN employees were videotaped.
