As gun sales rise, gun-related deaths are down statewide, up in Kern County

Some new ammunition is out for gun rights advocates. New statistics show gun sales are up in California in the last decade while gun related injuries are down, statewide. But in Kern County it's a different story.

Kern County gun sales are up but so is its firearm related injuries and deaths but not by much and officials say there may be other contributing factors.

According to the California Department of Justice, in 2002 350,000 guns were sold in California. In 2011 600,000 were sold.

"It's been a continual rise since I started," said Keith Foster, General Manager at Second Amendment Sports in Bakersfield. He's worked at Second Amendment for more than a decade.

In that same time period, according to the California Department of Public Health, gun related injuries statewide were down from 4,000 to 2,800. Gun deaths dropped from 3,200 to 2,800.

"I think that sounds about right. Criminals don't like to get shot at. They go after easy prey," said Foster.

But here in Kern County, gun sales are up but so are firearm deaths and injuries but only slightly. Officials said that difference could be due to the start of prison realignment and demographics.

But local activist Whitney Weddell says the discrepancy is the reason why you can't depend on statistics alone.

"The truth is they don't really show us anything," said Weddell. "What we do know is that there have been a rash of gun related atrocities lately and it does seem like something ought to be done about that."

"I always have believed that an armed citizen is a well-protected citizen," said Steve Smith of Bakersfield.

Smith hopes California's statistics end the recent talks of stricter gun laws.

"I've always believed that anytime you have someone that's armed they're better able to protect themselves so it's going to drive crime down," said Smith.

"Do I think everybody needs machine guns? No. Nobody needs machine guns. They're meant for one thing killing people," said Shaun Neal of Lake Isabella.

But Shaun Neal does think people have the right to own a gun.

"It's not the weapons," said Neal.

He said it's the people that kill and the numbers prove it.

"An armed society is a polite society, right?" said Foster.

Plasticmouse75, this is not just happening here in CA, it is happening nationwide. Look at Virginia, their gun sales have risen 73% since 2006. Violent crime involving firearms has gone down nearly 30%. Several other states have shown these same results.

Statistics alone can be misleading. Statistics do not prove causation. A correlation is simply a relationship and does not state whether it is a direct or indirect relation or if it is simply a coincidence. Good journalism could and should attempt to distinguish this and, hopefully find some direct relations, thus enlightening the publiv. . This article made some broad generalizations. In Bakersfield, guns sales are up. Deaths related to guns are up slightly. What is not being told and, perhaps, would be a lead for journalistic investigation ould be the drop in gun-related deaths because of better emergency care and medical attention. For a newspaper to make a claim or implication that deaths are down because more people have guns is poor reporting. In fact, it is not reporting. I is misleading. It is distorting wth half truths

It doesn't matter how long the response time is to a 911 call if 1911 is called on first.

WHEN the police arrive maybe a corner should be disputed as well. Dispatch time and response time from police equals good possibility of body recovery. Do you want that body to be you or a family member or do you want that body to be of the intruder that got "neutralized"? I'm picking to protect my family.

Yes I have followed the news stories and there is a shoot in the Eastside almost everyday of the year, then the people on that side of town complained that the media was giving them a bad rap! Hey they could also stop robbing and killing each other! Like that is ever going to happen!

Ok people have any of you followed the gun related deaths in Bakersfield over the years? If you had you will see that for the most part it has been within a square mile on the eastside of town centered on Virginia Ave! These gang baggers are killing each other and that's not a bad thing as long as they stay on their block! As for a few of the other gun related deaths they are home owner killing the gang baggers when they break into their homes, again not a bad thing! Now if only we can reduce the killings to only the gang baggers!

Did anyone catch the comment by Shaun in the article? Machine guns have been highly regulated in the US since the 1930s. The MS media has the ignorant thinking this is about MACHINE GUNS??? The ill informed will be the death of our freedoms.

kknjtg, if you get woke in the middle of the night tonight with the sound of someone kicking in your door, intent to do who knows what to you, make sure you call 911 asap. Then hide under your bed and wait for the police to arrive. But people who are prepared to defend themselves won't crawl away and hide. And they stand a lot better chance than your kind to not be a helpless victim.

kknjtg-- What place needs to be investigated? The gun store that is legally selling firearms to customers who are legally allowed to buy firearms? You should read the story, "On Sheep, Wolves, and Sheepdogs" by Dave Grossman. You'll find that you are a "sheep", who hides his head in the sand, refusing to look at reality, believing the Wolf will never knock at your door. In case you haven't heard, it's still legal for people in this country to defend themselves against deadly attacks.
