If soaring gas prices are keeping you close to home this Memorial Day weekend, you are not alone.

With gas topping more than $4 a gallon, more and more local drivers are celebrating Memorial Day in Kern County.

According to AAA the number of people travelling this Memorial Day weekend will fall for the first time since 2002.

AAA reports just over half of California travelers will take trips of 250 miles or less and 54 percent plan to spend $600 or less.

Many said thanks to high gas prices they will be shelling out big bucks to kick off the summer.

AAA also reports some of the top destinations for Bakersfield travelers are usually the Central Coast, Las Vegas, and San Diego.
