A man was shot and killed overnight at a home in central Bakersfield. The shooting happened around 12:30 Thursday morning on Millham Drive near Brundage. Police have not released much information, except to say a man in his 40's was shot several times. There are reports that he was found by his girlfriend but that is unconfirmed this morning. Detectives searched the neighborhood for suspects. There is no word on any arrests. We'll bring you more details as they become available.
A man charged with running over and killing an elderly couple is due in court today. Police say 45 year old Oscar Jimenez was high on drugs when he hit 70-year-old Albert Cichy and his wife, Anna Belle on the sidewalk. The couple was taking their daily walk down Auburn Street. Both later died. Jimenez faces two counts of second degree murder, DUI and driving with a suspended license.
County firefighters have contained a grassfire that swept across Tejon Ranch property last night. It started with a couple of spot fires in the Deer Trail area, south of Bear Mountain Boulevard east of Arvin. It ended up burning more than 330 acres. No structures were damaged and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Funeral services are set today in Utah for former 17News anchor Gaylen Young. Gaylen died last week, when the car he was riding in rolled several times on an interstate in Utah. He worked at KGET for 23 years, but moved to Utah in 2009 to be closer to his family.
The death toll continues to rise this morning, after tornadoes in the south left a path of destruction in five states. 128 are dead in Alabama alone and officials fear the numbers could increase. One of the hardest-hit areas was Tuscaloosa, Alabama where this tornado barreled through the city. The storm left debris in the streets and businesses unrecognizable. The city's mayor says the city's infrastructure has been decimated.
It's no secret that money troubles can put a strain on a marriage. As the economy soured, many couples opted to put their divorces on hold. But now, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers finds, after several years of declining divorce cases, the numbers are increasing as the economy improves. The housing market has also changed divorce battles. One attorney says instead of fighting to keep a house, couples now often battle over who's responsible for the debt.
The L.A. Times reports more students are falling behind on their student loans. A recent survey found that for every person who defaults on student loans, at least two more are late or short on payments.
Among all students borrowing to pay for their education, 1 in 4 is having trouble making full monthly payments.
