East Hills Mall demolition could begin by end of summer, city says

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Development on a new shopping center at the site of the East Hills Mall is set to begin in just a few months.

When it's finally redeveloped the shopping center will be known as the City Lights Shopping Center.

City Services Development Director Jacqui Kitchen told 17 News Thursday afternoon that demolition of the East Hills Mall is set to begin some time after summer.

Kitchen said City Lights will have name brand stores and restaurants similar to the ones at The Marketplace, but because of confidentiality agreements with developers Cushman & Wakefield, she couldn't be specific.

The site plans, however, show spaces for seven "major" stores up to 50,000 square feet and a 30,000 square foot movie theater. Other, smaller stores would surround the site along Mall View Road on the south.

Kitchen also said the plan for City Lights is to be that of an outdoor mall with walkability being a focus on the layout and design. The new shopping complex would have shaded walking areas, Kitchen said.
