Bakersfield native wins Pulitzer Prize

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Frank Bidart, American poet born in Bakersfield, won a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.

Bidart was born in Bakersfield, California on May 27, 1939, and educated at the University of California at Riverside and at Harvard University.

Bidart is currently an English professor at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

Bidart grew up in California and entertained thoughts of becoming an actor or director when he was young, according to Poetry Foundation. His plans changed, however, when he was introduced to literature at the University of California-Riverside, according to poets.org.
