A woman is dead after being hit by a car on White Lane in southwest Bakersfield Monday. It happened in the 2000 block of White Lane, between Hughes Lane and South H Street.
According to witnesses, a green Ford Explorer was driving east on White Lane when the driver struck a 50-year-old woman who was crossing the street, outside a crosswalk.
Another witness says the driver stopped and was crying and said she doesn't have a driver's license.
"As soon as we checked the lady to see if she was bleeding, her heart wasn't, her stomach wasn't moving, so I think she died instantly. As soon as I look, I see her car. She goes out this way and tries to leave on the street next to the Taco Bell. I jumped into my car, good thing that I had it right on White Lane. I got in. I came out. I went over there in front of her, and I parked my car and I told her, 'You know you can't leave. You have witnesses.' And, she's like, "I don't know what to do. I'm scared'." according to Jasmine Gomez who saw the accident.
Another witness says the driver, 24-year-old Desiree Comstock, tried to leave the scene. However, she ended up coming back to the scene to wait for police.
Police say Comstock was not drinking prior to the accident. They're still investigating and no arrests have been made.
