Shafter crop duster Alfred Fredrick Goss, 68, was killed Wednesday when his 75-year-old World War II airplane crashed in a field west of Bakersfield. Another man, Steven Dean Ballard, 54, of Anchorage, also was killed.

Goss was an air racing enthusiast who was National Champion in his class at the Reno Air Races in 2004. He was a popular pilot at local air shows, usually flying in the same AT-6 Texan plane that crashed Wednesday.

It happened at about 11:34 a.m. Witnesses said the single-engine propeller plane used to train pilots in World War II was doing maneuvers when it suddenly crashed without warning.

There were no injuries on the ground. The crash site is in farm fields about 20 miles due west of downtown Bakersfield, and is just south of the Frito Lay plant on Highway 58.

Crews from the Kern County Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Department were at the crash site. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board began their investigation Wednesday afternoon.

Too bad Sewinfool wasn't on the blame. Worthless comments.

Al was a great pilot. I had the opportunity to fly with him in that same plane that he crashed in. Al was my grandmas fiancee and after getting to know him for so many years I finally had the honor of calling him grandpa. He was a beloved person in our family and he will be deeply missed. Rest in peace Al we love you. Tara Clement

Steven Ballard was a veteran pilot. He flew Generals in the Navy. He was a commercial pilot for Alaskan Airlines. He was currently flying for Fedex out of Alaska. He had a wife, daughter, son, daughter in law and grandkids. He was a funny, intelligent, christian man. He loved his family and friends. He has a brother in Castaic and a brother and sister in Oregon. We will miss him very much.

Al's long time girlfriend, Anita, is my ex-wife. We met Al in 98, when he used to sing at our Karaoke show. Anita and I went our seperate ways and she and Al became a couple. As you might imagine all was not great between the 3 of us at first but eventually we became friends. Al even took me and my sister up for a ride in Warlock one Memorial day. I just want to say , I have never met a nicer, friendlier, greater guy than Al Goss. I can not say enough good things about this man. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. My heart goes out to Anita and all of his family and other friends. It was my great priviledge to have known him and I just wish i had spent more time with him. R.I.P. Al......David

I think that is the plane I saw flying rather low just south of Seventh Standard and Zerker Road around 11:20 this morning. Wow. How tragic.
