A military style plane crashed in a Tehachapi neighborhood Saturday, the plane narrowly missing two homes nearby.

Witnesses described what they saw.

"It went right, straight down." said witnesses Jeannette Crounse, she lives down the street from where the plane crashed.

"There was this huge billow of black, just black right in the middle of the road, it was like oh my gosh, that airplane just went down." said Crounse.

Authorities say shortly after one thirty Saturday afternoon, emergency crews received reports of a plane down near Highway 202.

Authorities say it was a L29 Aerovodochody 1968 style aircraft.

"It sounded like a sonic boom, it was a huge crash it was so close, I can't describe it." said Crounse.

Officials say the plane may have been flying with two other air craft when it went down.

Witnesses say the plane was part of a planned air show, as part of Tehachapi's fourth of July celebrations.
Investigators are calling it a tragic day for Tehachapi.

"It should be a day of celebration and unfortunately it resulted as a disaster of two lives." said Kern county Sheriff Lieutenant J.R. Rodriguez.

Investigators believe the plane took off from the Tehachapi airport, but never returned.

The Federal Aviation Administration has taken over the investigation.  One of the victims has been identified by the family as 42-year-old David Zweigle, the manager of Tehachapi Municipal Airport.  The coroner's office has not yet released the names of the two people confirmed dead.
