Kern County Sheriff's deputies say a man and woman are dead following a Monday evening shooting in Shafter.

Neighbors and family members suspect a husband shot his wife before taking his own life.

Some neighbors said they saw the couple fight often and they suspect the wife wanted a divorce, but they never thought it would come to this.

"It's very sad," said Amanda Gomez who lives nearby.

Family members embraced outside the crime scene tape on Orange Street where Sheriff's Deputies say a man and a woman died in a shooting.

"I saw two bodies out in the field. I guess a man and a woman were fighting," said Dustin Samaritas, who lives right across the street from the shooting.

Samaritas said the couple fought a lot and the cops had been called there several times.

"I think that she was going to leave him or they had problems. There was a moving truck there today," said Gomez.

Family members tell 17 News, they believe it was a murder-suicide. However, investigators could not confirm that.

"We're still piecing it together at this point, trying to figure out what led up to the shooting," said Lt. Adam Plugge of the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

Neighbors said this is normally a quiet street.

"It's kind of weird. I didn't expect anything like this to happen around here."

Neighbors said the couple has several kids who they hope can get through this horrible tragedy.

"I wish them the best, and I am sorry this had to happen," said Samaritas.
